John Mayer has released his first new music of 2019 with I Guess I just Feel Like, which has more than a hint of the country about it.
When John Mayer releases new music, you can basically flip a coin where heads is sunny and subdued and tails is blues-tinted and heavier. The former is often a source of exasperation in the Mayer fan base; here is a man with extraordinary talents on guitar, and it’s sometimes said that not enough of his music reflects this.
I Guess I Just Feel Like is definitely an example of the coin landing on heads, like most of the music Mayer has released in the last few years. That isn’t to say it’s not a welcome addition to his catalogue, but maybe it would have been nice to have a release more akin to Helpless than Emoji of a Wave.
The first two thirds of this track meander calmly towards the final section, and while it isn’t anything particularly new for Mayer, it’s far from unpleasant. I Guess I Just Feel Like’s melancholy lyrics blend with its country guitar licks with ease, but the final third is where it gets more interesting; the extended solo allows Mayer’s considerable guitar chops to take over and lead the song into something a with a little more grit to end on a high note (not literally).
While many of us would like to hear heavier things (pun fully intended) from Mayer, I Guess I Just Feel Like still has value and is a pretty effortless listen.
